Planning Family Travel: The Basics

Planning Family Travel: The Basics

Let the Adventure Begin!

Welcome, fellow explorers, to the wonderful world of family travel!  This is where the magic begins, where dreams take flight, and where bonds are strengthened through shared experiences.  Sorry if that's a bit corny, but well, I can be pretty corny, just ask my kids!  Whether you're new to family travel or you're a seasoned-pro with a passport full of stamps, in this very first blog post, lets set the stage for your family's grand adventure, igniting the spark of wanderlust and provide a general outline of what family travel planning looks like, from dream to souvenirs.

Family travel is not just about reaching a destination; it's about the journey itself – the laughter-filled car rides, the anticipation of exploring new places, and the joy of discovering hidden treasures along the way.  So, grab your maps, pack your bags, and get ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!

Picture this: You're gathered around the kitchen table, a world map spread out before you, as you and your family brainstorm your dream destinations.  Each family member takes turns sharing their bucket-list locations – from the snowy slopes of the Swiss Alps to the colorful markets of Marrakech.  As you listen to each other's ideas, you can feel the excitement building, knowing that the world is your oyster and adventure awaits around every corner.

Dreaming Up Destinations

As Julie Andrews sings in The Sounds of Music, "Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start...", see, I can't help the corny, it just comes out.  But back to the task at hand, close your eyes and imagine the possibilities – where in the world does your family dream of exploring?  Is it the majestic mountains of Switzerland, the sun-kissed beaches of Thailand, or the enchanting castles of Ireland?  Gather around and let your imaginations soar as you brainstorm your dream destinations.

Consider each family member's interests and passions – maybe one of you dreams of snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, while another longs to wander through ancient ruins.  By combining everyone's ideas, you'll create a travel wish list that's as diverse and unique as your family itself.

Setting the Budget (Without Bursting the Piggy Bank)

Ah, the dreaded budget talk – but fear not, brave adventurers, for setting a budget doesn't have to be a buzzkill!  Start by determining how much you're willing to spend on your family adventure, keeping in mind that every penny spent is an investment in priceless memories (if you haven't seen the meme's about 401M's, take a minute to check it out for a quick laugh).

Research destinations within your budget, seek out budget-friendly accommodations, and look for ways to save on transportation and activities.  Remember, the best experiences in life are often the simplest – so don't be afraid to get creative and think outside the box when it comes to budget-friendly travel options.

For example, lets say you're planning a cross-country road trip on a tight budget. Instead of dining out at expensive restaurants every night, opt for picnics in scenic roadside parks and cooking meals over a campfire.  Some of our kids favorite memories are places we've stopped for a budget picnic during a drive (one time included a front-row seat at our picnic spot of a tourist bus that "fell" into a tiny culvert along the road in the fjord town of Geiranger, Norway and stopped traffic for hours on the little mountain road).  Take advantage of free attractions and activities along the route, such as hiking trails, historical landmarks, and local festivals. Create a budget and stick to it, embracing the simple pleasures of travel, creating memories that will last a lifetime without breaking the bank.

Timing Is Everything

Timing is key when it comes to planning family travel.  Consider school holidays, work schedules, and peak tourist seasons when deciding on your travel dates. Traveling during off-peak times not only saves you money but also allows you to avoid the crowds and experience destinations at their most authentic.  We go to great lengths to avoid crowds, even if it does mean missing an occasional day (or five!) of school.

Take into account factors such as weather conditions and local events that may impact your travel plans.  And don't forget to leave room for flexibility – sometimes the most memorable adventures are the ones that happen spontaneously!

Instead of battling crowds at popular tourist attractions in July, opt to visit in May, when the weather is mild, the flowers are in bloom, and the streets are less crowded.  Take advantage of shoulder-season discounts on accommodations and attractions, allowing them to stretch their travel budget further and enjoy a more relaxed and authentic experience.  The town square might not have the same offering of adorable outdoor tables at the cafe's during shoulder-season, but the lack of crowds will absolutely make up for it.

Booking Accommodations: From Cozy Cottages to Luxury Resorts

Once you've chosen your destination and travel dates, it's time to find the perfect place to call home during your family getaway.  Whether you prefer the cozy comforts of a rustic cabin, the luxury of a five-star resort, or the adventure of camping under the stars, there's accommodation out there to suit every family's taste and budget.

Consider factors such as location, amenities, and proximity to attractions when choosing your accommodations.  And don't be afraid to read reviews and ask for recommendations – after all, a good night's sleep is essential for happy travels!  For instance, when we travel to Europe, we try and stay within the cities historic core, and usually plan to park the car once and just leave it while we are in the city.  Removing the stress of daily driving and hunting for parking can make the trip that much more relaxing.

Planning a beach vacation in Hawaii? Instead of booking a standard hotel room, you could opt for a spacious beachfront condo with a fully equipped kitchen, allowing you to save money on dining out and enjoy home-cooked meals with a view.  Take advantage of the condo's amenities, such as a swimming pool, barbecue area, and complimentary beach gear, ensuring a fun and relaxing stay for the whole family.

Plotting Out Your Itinerary: Adventures Await!

Now comes the fun part – plotting out your family's adventure-filled itinerary!  Research must-see attractions, family-friendly activities, and local delicacies to sample along the way.  Get everyone involved in the planning process, allowing each family member to choose one activity or excursion to add to the itinerary.

Leave plenty of room for spontaneity and unexpected discoveries – after all, some of the best travel memories are made when you least expect them.  And don't forget to build in downtime for relaxation and reflection – even the most intrepid adventurers need a chance to recharge their batteries!

Imagine planning a cultural immersion trip to Japan. In addition to visiting iconic landmarks such as Tokyo Tower and Kyoto's historic temples, explore off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, participate in traditional tea ceremonies, and sample street food at bustling markets.  Leave room in your itinerary for impromptu adventures, such as stumbling upon a lively festival or stumbling upon a hidden gem recommended by a friendly local, ensuring a rich and rewarding travel experience for the whole family.

Packing Like a Pro

Packing for a family trip can be a daunting task, but with a little planning and organization, you can pack like a pro!  Start by making a list of essentials – clothing, toiletries, medications, and any necessary travel documents.  Pack versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits, and don't forget to pack layers for changing weather conditions.  Any outerwear that packs down into a pocket or stuff-sack is a plus!

When it comes to packing for kids, less is often more – opt for lightweight, easy-to-wear clothing that can withstand the rigors of travel.  Don't forget to pack plenty of snacks and entertainment to keep little ones happy and occupied during long journeys.

Let's say you're packing for a week-long camping trip in the mountains.  Instead of packing bulky suitcases full of unnecessary items, opt for lightweight backpacks and duffel bags filled with essentials such as hiking gear, sleeping bags, and cooking supplies.  Pack a selection of versatile clothing items, such as moisture-wicking layers and quick-drying fabrics, to accommodate changing weather conditions and outdoor activities.  By packing smart and staying organized, it ensures a stress-free and enjoyable camping experience for the whole family.

Safety First: Tips for Traveling with Kids

Safety should always be a top priority when traveling with your family.  Take precautions to ensure the health and well-being of your loved ones, from keeping a close eye on little ones in crowded places to packing a first-aid kit for emergencies (I have two of our faves listed under "Our Favorite Gear").  Teach your children about "stranger danger" (which, you probably already have, but it never hurts to review) and how to stay safe in unfamiliar surroundings, empowering them to be active participants in their own safety.

Research potential health risks and vaccination requirements for your chosen destination, and take appropriate measures to protect your family's health while traveling.  With a little foresight and preparation, you can enjoy a safe and worry-free family adventure!

Say for example, you're traveling to Southeast Asia with your young children.  In addition to packing essential items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and hand sanitizer, you also research local health risks and take appropriate precautions, such as getting vaccinated and taking prophylactic medications (these are personal choices, but by researching ahead of time and you can see what the recommendations are then decided what's best for your fam).  You can also reinforce with your kiddos the importance of hand hygiene and safe food practices, such as washing fruits and vegetables before eating them.  By staying informed and proactive, you can ensure a healthy and enjoyable travel experience for the whole family.

Capturing Memories: Snapshots and Souvenirs

As you embark on your family adventure, be sure to capture every precious moment along the way.  Take plenty of photos to document your travels, from iconic landmarks to candid family moments.  Encourage your children to keep a travel journal or scrapbook, where they can write about their experiences and collect mementos from their journey.

As we've made our way around the globe, I've had some thoughts on "over-photoing" and traveling through a device instead of being in the moment.  We haven't allowed our kids to bring cameras or take pictures, but instead have told them to take pictures with their minds and be fully immersed in the experience and allow us (mom and dad) to worry about taking pictures and videos.  I have more thoughts on this, that will have to be shared in a subsequent blog post.  Now back to souvenirs...

Collect souvenirs from your travels – whether it's a seashell from a beachcombing adventure or a handmade trinket from a local artisan. These tangible reminders of your journey will serve as cherished keepsakes for years to come, evoking memories of your family's adventures whenever you look at them.

Our family collects a Christmas tree ornament for each country we visit (our kids get excited now about picking it out), and my husband and I collect a wine stopper from each place we visit.  If you travel a lot, it's easy to overwhelm your home with souvenirs; by choosing a few collections to start, you can prevent over-doing it on the kitsch and can build a cool collection that doesn't bombard all those that walk through your front door.

The Journey Home: Reflections and Fond Farewells

As your family adventure comes to a close, take a moment to reflect on the memories you've made and the bonds you've strengthened along the way.  Say goodbye to your temporary home away from home, knowing that the experiences you've shared will stay with you forever.  And remember, the end of one journey is just the beginning of the next – so until we meet again, happy travels!
